The 2022 White House OSTP Public Access Memo’s Origins and Impacts

Wednesday, February 21, 2024, 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Online, Open to the public, Presentation, Webinar,

In August 2022, Dr. Alondra Nelson, leading the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, issued a memorandum [PDF], commonly known as the “Nelson Memo” or “2022 OSTP Public Access Memo.” This directive mandates all federal funding agencies to update their public access policies by December 31, 2025, to make publications and their supporting data from federally funded research publicly accessible without any embargo. The Nelson Memo is recognized as a significant stride in shaping national policy on open access in the United States.

The webinar will delve into the origins, impacts, and current perspectives surrounding the 2022 OSTP Public Access Memo. Dr. Nelson will provide insights into the memo’s origins, while Dr. Maryam Zaringhalam, Assistant Director for Public Access and Research Policy, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Dr. Jessica Tucker, Acting Deputy Director of the Office of Science Policy, NIH, will speak to the impacts since its release.

Following the presentations, there will be a brief, moderated Q&A session, time permitting.
