ORAL HISTORY INITIATIVE: On the Grolier Poetry Book Shop

Monday, April 15, 2024, 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Lamont Library - Forum Room (Room #335)
Open to the public, Reading/Lecture,

The Woodberry Poetry Room welcomes you to celebrate the vital, timeless, bustling hub of literary and social activity--the Grolier Poetry Book Shop--through a lively, two-part event in its honor. The inaugural event on Monday, April 15, will feature an oral history conversation with Fanny Howe, Gail Mazur, Carol Menkiti, Robert Pinsky, and John Yau. Moderated by Lloyd Schwartz and curated with the help of James Fraser.

The event will also feature archival recordings and photographs from the bookstore's inimitable history. An informal reception and a pop-up installation of photographs, "Elsa Dorfman and the Magnifying Lens," will take place at the Poetry Room after the event. We are immensely grateful to Harvey Silvergate for his permission to present a selection of Dorfman prints. We also wish to thank Tom Healy for his generous support of this program.

In-Person Attendance: Forum Room, Lamont Library, Harvard University. Free and open to the public.

Online Attendance: Livestreaming available via the WPR YouTube Channel at 6:00pm (EST).

On Tuesday, April 16th, the Poetry Room invites you to join us for the second part of our festivities (The Community Megaphone Recording Sessions), which will take place at the Grolier Poetry Book Shop at 6 Plympton Street between 2:00-7:00PM. These sessions will offer you an opportunity to record your favorite stories about the Grolier and to add your voice and perspectives to Poetry Room's archive. Reservations are required.
