Data Carpentry

Register for Data Carpentry (must be a Harvard affiliate)
Please Note: There are a limited number of virtual spots in this workshop. They are intended for Harvard students who are not able to learn on campus this year. If you are an on-campus student, please register to attend in person.
Data Carpentry is a two-day, beginner-friendly workshop that will give you the foundational knowledge to take on data-intensive research with confidence. Data and technical skills are in high demand in the public policy field. You'll be able to use the basic tools and concepts taught in this workshop in your coursework and your career. Plus, you'll get free breakfast and lunch on both days, and build community with other Harvard learners and researchers!
Here's what you'll learn and when:
- Friday, September 12, 9:00AM-4:30PM: Tidy Data, OpenRefine, and Intro to R
- Learn best practices for organizing your data to prepare it for analysis.
- Learn how to clean and fix errors in your data.
- Learn how to navigate the R interface, use basic R code syntax, and navigate data file structures in R.
- Friday, September 19, 9:00AM-4:00PM: R for Data Analysis and Visualization
- Learn how to use R to analyze your data in a reproducible way.
- Learn how to use R to visualize your data in an aesthetically pleasing and persuasive way.
Who Can Join?: This workshop is limited to Harvard affiliates, and is geared toward graduate students and other researchers. You don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools presented at this workshop.
Requirements: Bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) on which you have administrative privileges. Before the workshop, you'll need to download the programs we'll be using. Details will be provided after your register.
