Curating and Preserving 3D Data in Academic Libraries

Thursday, September 18, 2025, 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Cabot Library
Harvard ID required, Presentation, Presentation,
Registration has closed.

In this panel, Zack Lischer-Katz (Assistant Professor, College of Information Science, U of Arizona) and Matt Cook (Digital Scholarship Program Director, Harvard Library) will discuss their 3-year project, 3D Research Data Curation Framework (3DFrame).

3D data formats can immerse users in archaeological dig sites or high-resolution medical images, place them in virtual contact with rare collections material, or put them nose to nose with lizards in distant jungles. However, these 3D data formats require librarians and digital curators to adopt new curation and preservation strategies to ensure that 3D data are discoverable and usable by broad audiences of scholars and students into the future.

Panelists will discuss how different 3D creators assess quality and curate their data sets, what levels of institutional support are needed to support 3D data creation, and how VR can be used in 3D data creation workflows. Attendees will hear about the state-of-the-scholarly 3D-art, learn about a range of use cases from across the country, and engage with the project team directly during an extended Q&A period.

I’m here to support your work with emerging computational methods, engaging learning spaces, and a campus-wide network of technological expertise. My personal research interests include 3D technologies (e.g. photogrammetry, VR, etc.) and embodied cognition. After studying philosophy at the undergraduate and graduate level (at the Universities of Florida and Oklahoma, respectively), I began working full time in libraries and developing new tools and systems to augment research and instruction across disciplines.

As a researcher, I also study the state and trajectory of digital scholarship more generally, as well as what it takes to manage exploratory teams in libraries and the impact of new knowledge services related to physical fabrication and mindfulness. If you are considering a digital scholarship component for your project, please reach out so we can discuss how  myriad library resources and collections might be employed to support your research, your lab, and/or other aspects of your scholarship.
