NEXT STOP, NOWHERE: A Ramble through John Wieners' World (with Jim Dunn)

Saturday, October 18, 2025, 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Open to the public, Presentation,

The bohemian side of Beacon Hill, behind the State Capitol building, was John Wienershome for the last 30 years of his life—from 1973 to 2002. On this tour, led by poet-scholar Jim Dunn, we will visit many of the sites that were a vital part of Wieners' world—including stops outside his apartment at 44 Joy Street, the Charles Street Meetinghouse (where he first heard Charles Olson read), and Stephen Jonas’ apartment (where the Magic Evenings were held).

John was one of the invisible denizens of these streets: we will walk "the old brick city" in his honor and read aloud from several resonant passages. Attendees are welcome to join us for some (or all) of the tour. The event will end on Charles Street at The Sevens, near the Charles Street stop on the Red Line.

LOCATION: The tour will begin outside the African Meeting House, 8 Smith Court, Boston, Massachusetts. If bad weather is forecasted, we will announce a cancellation 24 hours prior to the event. Please check our website and social media for rescheduling announcements.

Please note: Both the Head of the Charles regatta and a “No Kings” protest will be occurring on Saturday in Boston. We have scheduled this event to begin at 2:00pm to allow more time for those who are traveling into the city, as well as for those who plan to attend the boat race and/or the protest.

ACCESSIBILITY: This tour will last approximately one hour, and includes long sections of uneven surfaces and significant inclines. Please contact us at poetryrm@fas.harvard.edu or (617) 495-2454 with any questions.
