Join the first session of the "Data Horror Stories: What Haunts Projects and How to Exorcise It" Seminar Series. This event is co-sponsored by Countway Library and HMS/HSDM Office for Postdoctoral Fellows.

You thought you saved it. You know you saved it. But now it's gone! Vanished into the digital void, taking years of work with it.

Every researcher has a horror story. The hard drive that failed the night before a deadline. The dataset left behind by a departed lab member, cryptic and undocumented, like a message written in a language no one remembers. The folder that contains seventeen versions of a file, each one labeled "final."

These aren't just cautionary tales. They're real, they're common, and they're entirely preventable.

In the first session of our three-part series "Data Horror Stories: What Haunts Projects and How to Exorcise It" we're sharing some of the scariest data management failures drawn from real-world headlines and the lived experiences of Harvard researchers and staff. We'll dig into what went wrong, why it went wrong, and what you can do to make sure it never happens to you.

Meet Your Guides Through the Data Haunted House:

  • Robert Hill, Lab Director, Christopher A. Walsh Lab, Howard Hughes Medical Institute
  • Meg Kerr, Longwood Medical Area Records Manager and Archivist, Center for the History of Medicine
  • Allison Maier, Data Manager, Laboratory of Systems Pharmacology, Harvard Medical School
  • Sarah Marchese, Research Data Manager, FAS Research Computing
