I Can Do That With Twitter? Using Social Media in Your Research Projects

Thursday, November 7, 2019, 7:30pm - 8:30pm
Lamont Library
Registration has closed.

Every day, we use social media to document our lives, observe our world, express what matters to us, and participate in civic life.

Increasingly, academics are using these familiar tools to ask and answer research questions about how social groups function. The data they gather from online communities can help them spot geographic trends, analyze current events, and propose solutions to big problems.

You can use social media as a research tool, too, for projects big and small!  Find out how in this 1-hour workshop.

We’ll help you think about some easy ways create and distribute research surveys on social media platforms and how to crowdsource public opinion for projects that you’re working on. We’ll “web scrape” content from Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram about some current events and “listen in” to what it might tell us. And we’ll consider how to do this work ethically and responsibly – and why that matters.

**All first years are welcome: no prior knowledge required.**

Workshop will be held in Lamont 30. Bring your laptop with you.

Session repeats Friday, November 15, 2019, 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Lamont B30.

Sarah DeMott, Research Librarian in Lamont, will lead the worksop.
