2020 Harvard Library Holiday Party

Thursday, December 10, 2020, 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Virtual (Zoom)
Community/Well-Being,

Martha Whitehead, Vice President for the Harvard Library & University Librarian and Roy E. Larsen Librarian for the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, and the Harvard Library Leadership Team, invite you to the Harvard Library Holiday Party. Martha will lead us in a toast, we’ll hear from staff across the library, and then we will open optional breakout rooms of various activities.

Remember to bring your own festive beverage for the toast! If you wish, download a festive virtual background here. And there's still time to submit a recipe (holiday-themed or not) for the library's recipebook. Instructions here

Breakout Room Activities & What to Expect

You are welcome to join any room through the new ‘self-selecting’ breakout room feature on Zoom! There will be 2-3 rooms per activity to minimize overcrowding in each room, in addition to several ‘social hour’ rooms if you want to chat with fellow colleagues.

Activities You May Choose to Join:

1. Game Rooms: Pictionary Game Room or Library-themed Pictionary Game Room or Scattergories Game Room

Library-themed Pictionary Game Room: Your classic pictionary game, but online and with a Library theme.

Pictionary Game Room: With so many of you interested in the game rooms, we opened up a second pictionary game!

Scattergories Game Room: List as many items in a particular category, each starting with a specific letter of the alphabet before time runs out. Ready, set, go!

2. Beloved Pets: Pets & Their 'Astonishing Tails' Room or Pet Costume Party Room

Astonishing Tails Room: Share a favorite story about your furry friend(s), tricks or other silly anecdotes. Of course, we hope these furry protagonists can join us on screen!

Pet Costumes Room: Let’s see your beloved four-legged friends in their (your) favorite costumes!

3. Scavenger Hunt Rooms: "Pieces of History" Room or "Decoration or Everyday Item?" Room

Pieces of History Room: See how many items you can find in your own home – all based on things from time gone by and share stories for any particularly meaningful items. *This will require moving around and each round will be timed so choose your spot at home carefully!

Decoration or Everyday Item? Room: See how many items you can find in your own home that fit the categories (you are welcome to use items that could have a holiday theme if they fit!). Points will be tallied for whoever returns first and for sharing stories of any items with special meanings – winners get bragging rights!

4. Crafting Rooms: Fiber Crafts Room or Paper Crafts Room.

Fiber Crafts Room: We will be open-knitting, crocheting, sewing, etc. Already have a project? Work on it here, or just show it off! Don’t have a project? Here are two small-scale, seasonal, free pattern choices: Crochet snowflake or Embroidery snowflake

Paper Crafts Room: Choose from any of the below options or bring your own!

Snowflakes: all you really need is paper and scissors, but feel free to accessorize with glitter, paint, markers, gems, whatever you have on hand!

Martha Stewart’s snowflakes or Sea life snowflake patterns or Star Wars snowflake patterns(everyone needs a Baby Yoda snowflake right?) or 3D snowflake pattern or 3D star pattern(for those with printer & glue handy)

Coloring: download our holiday themed coloring page, print your own choice, or bring your own coloring book!

Harvard Fine Arts Library Collections or British Library Collections

Lettering: grab your favorite pen or brush and download optional free templates. (Even if you don't print them, looking at examples can be helpful!) If you enjoy modern, swooshy calligraphy, try Molly Suber Thorpe’s lettering toolkit (for the modern, swooshy calligraphy enthusiast) or try this pencil calligraphy worksheet (great if you don't have a brush but do have a pencil)

Have a craft that doesn’t fit into either category neatly? Join either room! The more the merrier.

5. Contest Rooms: Festive/Ugly Sweater Contest Room or “How creative is your virtual background” Contest Room

Festive/Ugly Sweater Room: The good, the bad, and the ugly! Cozy up with us on the fine glittery line between festive and tacky, whether you come to observe or to put yourself in the running for one of the following superlatives: Best DIY, Most DIY-looking, Most Interactive, Funniest, Most Original, '2020iest', Most Festive, Best Library-Themed

“How creative is your virtual background” Room: Time to put those computer creativity skills to the test! Design your own virtual background and share with others. Your chance to be awarded one of the following superlatives: Most Holiday Spirit, Coziest Creation, Best Animal Inclusion, 'Essence of Harvard Library', Wintriest Wonderland, Is it Zoom or Fantasy Vacation?

6. Social Hour Rooms (there will be various options to choose from)

*Self-selecting breakout rooms require Zoom version of 5.3.1.
Check your version on the desktop app: Select your profile image, click 'Help' then 'About Zoom'.

**If you plan to join by phone please let Grace Strong know which room you’d like to join and you will be moved.
