Access

  • Harvard-Yenching Library Special Collections Reading Room is currently open to all researchers (both HUID holders and visiting researchers).
  • Non-HUID holders are encouraged to register for a Library Access Card with Harvard Library Access and Borrowing Office before accessing the library.

Step 1: Schedule a Reading Room Appointment

  • Special Collections materials must be viewed in Harvard-Yenching Library's Special Collections Reading Room (3rd Floor).
  • Scroll down to schedule an appointment (at least 24 hours in advance).

Step 2: Request Materials to View

  • Submit requests by 2:00pm at least 2 business days before your planned visit— many materials are offsite or require review.
  • In the HOLLIS record, use the “Request to Scan or Visit” link to submit a HOLLIS Special Request. Please note there will be no automated email confirmation.
  • Submission of a request does not guarantee material availability by your selected visit date. If you have questions, contact us to confirm your plans before your visit.

General Guidelines

  • Best practices for handling special collections must be strictly followed to preserve materials for future use.
  • Professional staff are always available to provide guidanceif you notice any materials deteriorating or out of order, please inform us.
  • Researchers are welcome to bring pencils, laptop or tablet computers, phones, and digital cameras to assist in their research.
  • Users may not use pens, tripods, camera flashes, special lighting, or equipment that rests directly on collection material or that may pose a risk of damage.
  • Researchers are welcome to photograph most materials. Some collections may be subject to donor stipulations that limit or prohibit photography. Researchers are asked not to take pictures of the Reading Room itself, other patrons, or staff.
  • Phone calls are not allowed in the Reading Room. In order to preserve relative quiet for our researchers, we ask laptop computer, handheld device, and digital camera users to turn off all audible features, if possible. Ear plugs are available upon request. 
  • Cubbies are available to store any materials not permitted in the reading room, such as food and drink, bags, outerwear, and writing instruments other than pencils. Sweaters and scarves are permitted to be worn in the reading room but should be stored in cubbies when not being worn.
