Access

• Harvard-Yenching Library Special Collections Reading Room is currently open to all researchers (both HUID holders and visiting researchers).
• Non-HUID holders will need to register for a Library Access Card with Harvard Library Access and Borrowing Office before accessing the library.

Request Materials to View

• In the HOLLIS record, use the “Request to Scan or Visit” link to connect to HOLLIS Special Request and request special collections materials for viewing.
• Some requests, especially for materials stored offsite, may require two to four business days to process.
• Please note that Hollis Special Request does not send automated email confirmations. Feel free to contact us to confirm availability as needed before scheduling your visit.

Schedule a Reading Room Appointment

• Special Collections should be viewed in Harvard-Yenching Library's Special Collections Reading Room (3rd Floor).
• We request that you schedule an appointment to visit the Special Collections Reading Room using the provided link.
• Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance.

General Guidelines

Some things to keep in mind for your visit:

• General guidelines for handling special collections must be strictly followed to preserve materials for future use.
• Researchers should not remove items from the Reading Room or rearrange any items within a folder or folders within a box. If you notice any materials out of order, please inform library staff.
• The use of pens, tripods, scanners, camera flashes, special lighting, or any equipment that rests directly on collection materials or could pose a risk of damage is not permitted.
• Researchers are welcome to photograph most materials, although some collections may have donor restrictions limiting or prohibiting photography. Please do not take photos of the Special Collections Reading Room, other patrons, or library staff.
• To maintain a quiet environment for researchers, we ask that laptop and camera users disable all audible features if possible.
• Phone calls are not allowed in the Reading Room.
